Through the 'Scholarship Program in Science and Mathematics: Supporting the Academic Achievements of Disadvantaged Students' at Kennesaw State University, the National Science Foundation has been strengthening the U.S scientific workforce by supporting academically talented and financially disadvantaged students who would otherwise have difficulties reaching their academic/career goals. The project will award over 100 scholarships to students majoring in mathematics, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biochemistry and computer science over a five-year period. Selected students who satisfy the eligibility requirements (including a minimum 3.0 GPA) will receive annual scholarships up to $4,000, depending upon their financial need.

The project has awarded 109 students majoring in mathematics, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biochemistry, information systems and computer science over a five-year period. Selected students who have satisfed the eligibility requirements (including a minimum 3.0 GPA) have received annual scholarships up to $3,000, depending upon their financial need.

A. Scholarship Eligibility:
The following criteria should have been met in order to be considered for the NSF scholarship in science and mathematics at Kennesaw State University:
- Be U.S. citizens, nationals, aliens admitted as refugees, permanent resident aliens;
- Be enrolled full time in a baccalaureate degree program in one of the STEM disciplines (mathematics, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biochemistry, computer science, information technology) as shown in the departmental records.
- Demonstrate academic potential via a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
- Demonstrate financial need as defined by the U.S. Department of Education.
B. Criteria for Retention of Scholarships:
In order to retain the scholarship, the S-STEM scholar must have continued to satisfy all the eligibility requirements mentioned above, enrolled in the learning communities specially designed for the NSF students, attended classes on a regular basis, attended the monthly meetings with their advisors, participated in at least 3 seminars/talks every semester, visited the Career Services once every semester and made sufficient progress toward the degree in each semester.
